Acts One Eight Ministries

Costa Rica

Current Mission Assignment: Zona Sur (Southern Zone), Costa Rica

Missionary Background: We created Costa Rica Mission Projects, now Acts One Eight Missions, In 2003. We have been hosting Volunteers in Mission teams in support of the Methodist Church of Costa Rica for 15 years.

Prayer needs: Prayers for wisdom as we continue to lead this ministry forward. Prayers for our family as we deal with the stresses of “on call” 24/7 full-time ministry.

Ministry focus: We are a support ministry for the Methodist Church of Costa Rica. We make sure that the local churches have the facilities that they need to develop the ministries that they’ve been called to in their communities.

Where is your ministry located? San Isidro, Costa Rica

Who is reached?

  • Local Methodist churches through our building projects
  • Children from no/low income families through our daycare center
  • Female college students through our student housing program

Strategies employed in this ministry: Church Strengthening and Community Development. The volunteer teams who come to work with us are living witnesses of Christ’s love for all God’s children. The local churches we support are keenly focused on reaching the unchurched in their communities. Through VBS with children and evangelism pushes in specific communities.

What impact have you seen? By walking alongside local churches, we are able to play a part in this local church growth and outreach in their communities. We hear testimonies on a regular basis from volunteers from the US whose lives have been changed by their experience here.

Financial Needs:

All of our project costs are covered by the volunteer teams that come to Costa Rica. We make commitments to projects based on how many teams are on our calendar. We raise our salary support outside of the project cost for teams. So, technically, 0% of project cost is used for administrative expenses.

Douglasville FUMC has been a very faithful supporter of our family for several years. As our family has grown, so have our expenses. If DFUMC would consider an increase in salary support, we would be grateful.

Short-term mission opportunities: Please continue to send teams to be a part of the Kingdom work being done here!

Lyle Thomas

Orphan Dreams

Current Mission Assignment: Training leaders and teams for missional engagement in Russia, based out of St. Petersburg.

Missionary Background: Previously, Lyle Thomas founded and directed a nonprofit ministry in Richmond, VA, called Christian Ministries United to empower citywide cooperation.

Prayer needs: For a strong family that radiates the love of Christ to all who pass through our home - which is a lot!

Ministry focus: Lyle’s goal is the formation of a mission team that will carry the Good News of Jesus via the multiplication of mission communities that engage the lost of their own turf.

Where is your ministry located? I am based in St. Petersburg, but I have been increasingly traveling to various parts of Russia to lead trainings.

Who is reached? Lyle ministers primarily to Russians, though some ethnic minorities also come through their doors. Youth are also sometimes ministered to, like through a youth camp that was organized last year.

Strategies employed in this ministry: Church Planting, Church Strengthening, Discipleship, Evangelism, and Leadership Development. We use elements of the Disciple Making Movements (DMM) strategy for church multiplication.

What impact have you seen? At this stage, our greatest impact has been in the lives and families of those who go through one of our programs. Church cultures have been impacted. One day, we hope to see statistically verifiable changes in the city.

Other than financial support, what other ways can our church support your ministry? I would love for some group to adopt us, meaning know intimately about us, for the sake of being our voice at the church.

Short-term mission opportunity: We would be interested in helping organize a trip to mostly get a vision for what we do and why it’s important.

Jon and Angie Sullivan

Global Relief for Crises & Emergencies, Inc.

Current Mission Assignment: G.R.A.C.E. exists to foster social change through strengthening families and eradicating the vulnerabilities of human trafficking (of minors in Thailand).

Missionary Background: Jon and Angie have an extensive history of missions, including trips to Pakistan, Ukraine, Russia, and local missions.

Prayer needs:

  • Pray for the more than 100 families whom we have the privilege to serve.
  • Pray for child sponsors to commit to financially supporting a child or a family resource center.
  • Pray for our GRACE team.
  • Pray for a larger facility in Pattaya.
  • Pray for funding as approximately 85 children will receive financial support for school fees, backpacks, books, etc. (total is approximately $5,100).
  • Pray for the network of relationships with local and national governmental leaders and NGOs in Thailand.
  • Pray for volunteers to serve in Thailand.
  • Pray those within our circle of influence will see Jesus Christ glorified. May they come to know him.

Ministry focus: GRACE prevents minors from human trafficking through the eradication of vulnerabilities of illiteracy and alleviating the burden of poverty through educational, nutritional and wellness support. More than 100 children participate in a child sponsorship program. GRACE provides family resource centers with after-school and day camp programs, and adult enrichment classes. GRACE provides counseling and research services. GRACE is expanding into family-based foster care provisions as an alternative to the orphanage and shelter childcare options.

Where is your ministry located? Our GRACE Thailand office is based in Pattaya. We have a Family Resource Center located east of Pattaya, Thailand. We have expanded our sponsorship program into Korat and provide activities for the children and families residing in the Railroad Slum Community.

Who is reached? Our people group is the Thai with a focus is ministering to the children and youth. Our primary area of interest includes families who live in the slums of the city. These are low income families who are at risk of being trafficked or exploited.

Strategies employed in this ministry:

All children attend the bible story time with relative activities, songs, crafts, etc. The older children receive personal Bibles to keep at home. We share testimonies of God working in and through our lives.

Community Development

We provide classes for parents that include but is not limited to financial management, parenting skills, wellness and health, social skills, bible classes, and marriage enrichment. We provide marriage conferences, and mental health conferences for NGO workers serving in the anti-trafficking industry.

We provide discipleship counseling for missionaries, NGO workers, and expat in Thailand and around the world via video. We mentor men and women serving in various ministries throughout this city.

Each week the children receive a bible story at the Family Resource Center. This is done in a Buddhist society where Christianity is essentially not understood.

Humanitarian Aid

Families of the child sponsorship program receive nutritional supplies including rice, cooking oil, fish and oyster sauces throughout the year. Every family receives personal hygiene supplies throughout the year including dental supplies every two months.

Leadership Development

GRACE provides multiple leadership conferences targeting ministry leaders; specifically, those working in anti-trafficking work.

GRACE networks with other organizations to host medical clinics within the family resource center. GRACE provides funding to cover pharmaceuticals, hospitalization and physician costs exceeding the general visit.

Educational Development

GRACE provides educational support through homework assistance, tutoring and English language classes during the after-school and day camp programs at the Family Resource Center.

What impact have you seen? We have witnessed many indications that the ministry is effective. There are several instances in which children entered the after-school program who provide homework assistance testify of children gaining a new confidence and exhibiting acceleration in comprehension. Since these are actively attending school, they are less apt to dropout. In Thailand, children often drop out of school before the age of 13. Some never go to school at all. The illiteracy often results in generational poverty making them subject to the traffickers (labor and sex) and exploitation. Parents report to us that they are seeing a change in their children’s attitude about school and at home. At times, parents just “hang out” at the Family Resource Center because of the peaceful and tranquil feeling they receive by being there. Some parents have said that they see that Jesus has come to help them. GRACE collects and analyzes data relative to the effectiveness of our programs. Twelve measures, including numbers in attendance of various programs and humanitarian aid distributed, are consistently followed and reported to GRACE received the highest award relative to effectiveness and transparency in 2017.

Other than financial support, what other ways can our church support your ministry? Come to Thailand to see what is happening. Send an occasional email to encourage staff. Send dental and hygiene supplies. Follow our ministry on social media (Facebook & Instagram). Share about GRACE and encourage those within your circle of influence to sponsor a child.

Short-term mission opportunity: We’d be honored to have teams come and assist with the ministry in Thailand. A short-term missions team will experience the activities at the family resource center, travel to various ministry areas including Pattaya and Korat, visit and minister to impoverished families living in the slum communities, connect with the network of ministries and churches in our communities, provide a “VBS” for the children, teach the children to play American football, baseball, basketball (the children are intrigued with the sports), prayer walks, etc. Potentially, with adequate communication and coordination, opportunities include teaching English language to the children and/or speaking at a conference encouraging local missionaries.
